Julianne, The manifest page has the name of the my great grandparents, Juan Pachon and Lorena Reina Jaen. My grand mother's name was Dolores Pachon (11) and my great aunt's name was Carmen (13).
Now I have two out of the 8 grand parents that were on the Ship.
All of my family was from southern Spain...Malaga, Granada, Ronda, and Jaen... What about yours??
Also, do you know how difficult it is to find the original ship manifest??
My family was from Southern Spain...Malaga, Jaen, Granada, and Ronda.
My great grandparents were named: Juan Pachon and Lorenza Reina Jaen...their two daughters names were Carmen Pachon (13) and Dolores (my grandmother) was 11. My grandfather, was married Dolores, was Jose Perez. This is my mother's side of the family.
On my father's side their names were: Manuel ramos Gonzales & Maria Goday.
Where are your relatives from? Also, how difficult is it to find the manifest??
I have found the manifest on Ancestry.com... which I no longer have a subscription to. But I do have access to an listing of the passengers from the Heliopolis from a fellow descendent, Robert Rodrigues. I am working on converting it to be a searchable document and then it will be posted
Eureka......I found it.....took me two months to figure it out ...but the Ramos's on the manifest (44)...is my ggf Manuel Ramos (age 44) should be Manuel Gonzalez ramos....and the family is Gonzalez...with a z. My grandfather age 15 was listed as Jose Ramos.....but was always known by Joseph Gonzales (with the s)
fantastic, our family also voyaged from Spain and Portugal to Hawaii aboard the Heliopolis, and later aboard the Lurline from Hawaii to San Francisco in 1920.
Cheers!
Becky (family names aboard the ship: Villena and DeCorte)
sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I've been distracted.
First I would like to mention that in Spain people have multiple surnames, the first being their fathers name and the 2nd being the mothers fathers name; thus surnames on the Manifest would be their legal names in Spain. When they immigrated to America, they would have dropped their mothers name and used only their fathers last name.
I have a friend that is working on a new index to the manifest. He would like to know what town your ancestors are from.
is the town "Futalan or Tutalan", He thinks it is Totalan
on May 2 2011, you said: On my father's side their names were: Manuel Ramos Gonzales & Maria Goday
Might she have another family name? or a different spelling? Christobal does not recognize the surname Godoy, as being from Totalan, but a people very, very close are called "Colmenar"
Gonzalez part of my family. Manuel Gonzalez Ramos was married to Maria Godoy Godoy.Their son Miguel Gonzalez Godoy married Lucia Pretel Moles [my great aunt]. Other children: Jose, Manuel, Manuela, Salvador, Maria Maria Gonzalez Godoy married Jose Ruiz Aguera. Their child Maria Ruiz Gonzalez married my great uncle Manuel Pretel Moles.

Gary, it is unlikely that I will be able to help with our families knowing each other, but I will notify you if I find anything.
Till then I hope you enjoy reading about the voyage. Where in Spain is your family from? what are their first names?
